'ALTARS TO A PERCEPTION OF SELF'
The intended outcome of the piece was to assemble a body of work that would culminate in a type of memorial altar or metaphorical burial to the externally collated aspects of the sense of self I have clung on to and identified with that no longer serve me, within my search for inner truths and liberation from the confines of society.
In turn, it was my hope and aspiration that the works I eventually exhibited, would evoke similar self reflective emotions within the viewer that may help to challenge their own preconceived idea of who they really are and to consider the extent to which the influences and situations they have encountered throughout their lives have shaped their perceptions and self identity.
The works eventually consisted of an array of varying methods of expression and individual pieces that came in the form of sculpture, film, screen print and the adaptation of ready made natural items. These then came together to form a holistic body of work that was heavily influenced by transformations visible within nature such as that of the shedding of the snake or the metamorphosis a moth undertakes, referencing the parallels between them and the psychological transformation I feel one must undergo to shed the destructive collation of social and cultural influences.
