'AETHER'
The five platonic solids were the most prominent inspiration behind the creation of this piece. Through experimentation and artistic enquiry, which involved, experimental drawing, textile manipulation, photo editing and more, I eventually explored how to artistically represent the platonic solids and the corresponding elements associated with them, Hexahedron (earth), Icosahedron (water), tetrahedron (fire), octahedron (air) and dodecahedron (ether).
The cube or hexahedron was the initial interest as it represents earth, the initial roots of the project, solidity, the first tier in the evolution of life, the first eight cells of a physical being and carbon, with the atomic number of 6, 6 protons, 6 electrons and 6 neutrons, coincidently also the dimensions of the cube, 666. We are all baptized within the flesh, it is only when one crucifies the lower energies and impulses that the hex is broken, the cube is opened up to reveal the cross and ascension to ones higher self is possible.
The cube would become a way of presenting the development, or roots, of the overall study and would not only include the physical development for each area of study in the form of accordion like ambiguous books, but would also incorporate all aspects or mediums of expression within its creation. The construction of the cube would be completed using 3D sculpting techniques, the engravings and accordion like sketchbook presentation documents that would be attached to the inner panels of the cube, would be created using digital processes, the textile inlay would be created and printed in textile manipulation techniques and the outer body of the cube would be painted and treated. Paradoxically, the cube, that was only intended on being a means of presenting the development works, then went on to become the all encompassing final piece of the project, as its creation was fundamental in prompting me to find connections and relationships between disciplines as they are all intrinsically connected to one an other and when amalgamated, can be utilized to create a unique and multifaceted response.
